Considerations for Client PC's and ConsoleWorks 4.x

The server for ConsoleWorks v4.x does not use much more horsepower than the server did for v3, so your current ConsoleWorks server should be just fine.

If using Windows XP for your client PC, this should not be an issue either, although we do find that Windows 7 overall seems to run faster.

ConsoleWorks v3.7, had hand coded JavaScript pages that were limited in what we could continue to add as far new functionality. So for v4 we switched to a 3rd party highly customizable front end because of customer requests for more GUI functions. Some of those new functions are things like the addition of more fields for consoles, events, users, groups, etc that you could put your own User Defined data in. You can display those as well as many of the existing fields in the Consoles:View page, or the Event:View page, etc and sort on any those columns as well You'll also find Right Click menus on many of the objects that we could not have provided in the previous generation of ConsoleWorks.

As a result of these changes, more CPU is now required by the Client PC, and this may be where users may feel they're seeing a "slow"ness in the new ConsoleWorks

So some things to consider are:

  • What does your client machine have for a CPU? Would it be considered modern today? (3yrs old or newer).
  • how much memory does the client machine have? More memory helps of course, but if you're using 32bit windows you're limited to 3GB.

Browsers

If you're still using IE 6, keep in mind that IE 6 was released in 2001. It's 10yr old technology today. IE 9 has a pretty good JavaScript engine but FireFox still has the best JavaScript engine and seems to render ConsoleWorks the best.

Also, if you've found the Event Ticker in ConsoleWorks 4, (located in the user preferences), keep in mind this feature uses quite a bit more PC memory and resources. Another thing to note is hidden windows. Check to see if you left a window open that you're no longer using. Maybe Events:Occurrences, or Events:Active Summary, or Users:View etc.. Be in the habit of closing any unused windows as most of them have a "notification" type of refresh happening.
